Gardeners' Common Questions
Winter is ideal for growing vegetables and herbs such as spinach, coriander, lettuce, radish, carrot, beetroot, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and turnip. Many winter flowers can also be started during the cooler months.
In most areas of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, winter sowing can usually begin from September/October and continue through the cooler months like February depending on the crop. In colder northern areas, sowing time may vary according to local temperature and frost conditions.
If you want to grow several varieties, a Winter Vegetable, Winter Flower or other seasonal seed bundle is usually more convenient. Bundles give you multiple suitable varieties together, while individual packets are better if you only want specific plants.
Use a light, well-draining and nutrient-rich growing medium. A good mix can include potting mix with compost or vermicompost, along with coco peat and perlite where needed. Avoid heavy soil that stays waterlogged during winter.
Young plants should not be over-fertilized. Start with good-quality compost or vermicompost and introduce fertilizer once plants are established. A balanced fertilizer such as NPK 19-19-19 or 20-20-20 can support general growth, while crop-specific fertilizers can be used later according to the plant's flowering or fruiting stage.
