Why HDPE?
HDPE grow bags are stronger and stiffer than ordinary non-woven fabric bags. They stand upright once filled, resist tearing, and are lightweight and easy to move compared to clay or cement pots of the same size, which makes them ideal for rooftops where weight matters.
How to Fill
- Open the bag fully and place it where it will stay. A filled 63-litre bag is heavy to move.
- Fill with a loose, well-draining potting mix. A blend of garden soil, compost or vermicompost, and coco peat works well for most plants.
- Leave 1–2 inches of space below the rim for watering.
- Water thoroughly to settle the mix, top up if it sinks, then plant.
Watering & Care
- Water deeply until it drains from the bottom, then wait until the top 1–2 inches of mix feel dry before watering again.
- In peak summer, large plants may need daily watering. Check the mix rather than following a fixed schedule.
- Place on bricks or a stand to help drainage and protect rooftop surfaces.
- Feed regularly during active growth, since nutrients wash out of containers faster than garden beds.
FAQs
Can I grow a lemon or guava plant in this bag?
Yes. At 17" wide and 17" deep it suits young fruit plants. As they mature over a few years, you can move them to a larger container or the ground.
How many tomato plants fit in one bag?
One plant per bag gives the best yield. Tomatoes grow large root systems and produce more fruit with the full space.
Is it suitable for rooftops?
Yes. HDPE bags are much lighter than clay or cement pots of the same volume, and placing them on bricks keeps the roof surface dry.
How much potting mix do I need?
About 55–60 litres per bag once you leave space at the top for watering.
