How to Grow
How to Take Care of your Summer Gardens in Pakistan
Summer gardens in Pakistan need additional care because high temperatures increase water loss and place stress on plants. Soil improvement, correct watering, mulch, and shade can help plants remain healthier through hot weather.
Improve Soil Quality
- Add well-decomposed compost or suitable organic matter before planting. It contributes nutrients, improves soil structure, and can increase moisture retention.
- Healthy soil also supports beneficial microorganisms and earthworms. Avoid assuming that soil organisms alone will prevent every pest; regular observation is still necessary.
Water at the Right Time
Early morning is generally the best time to water during summer. Cooler conditions allow water to enter the soil before rapid evaporation begins and give plants access to moisture during the hottest part of the day.
- Water the soil deeply enough to reach the root zone instead of applying only a light surface sprinkle.
- Check the growing medium before watering. Daily watering may be required for some small pots during severe heat, but larger containers and ground beds may dry more slowly.
- Pots and hanging baskets usually need more frequent checks than plants growing in open ground.
- Use saucers carefully. They can reduce mess and briefly hold drainage water, but roots should not remain in standing water for long periods.
- Terracotta and unglazed containers lose moisture quickly. Grouping pots, applying mulch, or using larger containers can slow drying.
Reduce Summer Stress
- Apply organic mulch after plants are established.
- Protect sensitive plants from harsh afternoon sun with suitable shade cloth.
- Keep containers away from intensely heated walls and concrete where possible.
- Maintain airflow while protecting tender plants from strong, drying wind.
- Inspect plants regularly for wilting, leaf scorch, pests, and blocked drainage.
