Flower Growing Questions
Cool-season flowers such as petunia, pansy, calendula, sweet pea, snapdragon, stock, poppy, dianthus and larkspur grow best in Pakistan's winter. Browse our winter flower seeds for the full range.
In most of Punjab and Sindh, sow winter flowers from late September to November and summer flowers such as zinnia, sunflower, portulaca and cosmos from February to April. Check the planting calendar for month-by-month options.
Yes. Compact flowers like petunia, pansy, marigold, dianthus and portulaca do very well in pots. Use a light potting mix, make sure pots drain well and give plants at least 5–6 hours of sunlight.
Sprinkle tiny seeds on the surface of moist seed-starting mix in seedling trays and press them lightly — do not bury them deep. Keep the mix moist with a spray bottle and transplant seedlings once they have 3–4 true leaves.
Start with compost or vermicompost at planting time. Once plants are established, a feed with higher phosphorus and potassium encourages more blooms. See our fertilizers & nutrients and avoid too much nitrogen, which gives leaves instead of flowers.
