How to Plant

1. When: August to October in the plains; August–September in hilly areas.
2. Soil: Light, sandy-loam, very well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soil – corms will rot.
3. Depth & spacing: Plant pointed side up, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart.
4. Sunlight: Full sun, at least 6 hours a day.
5. Water: Water once after planting, then lightly only when the soil is dry. Stop watering in summer when leaves turn yellow and the corms go dormant.

Harvesting Saffron

Flowers appear in October–November, usually 6–8 weeks after planting. Pick flowers in the morning when they open, pull out the three red stigmas, and dry them in a warm, shaded place. Store the dried threads in an airtight glass jar away from light.
