Patience Required
Never harvest in years 1 or 2 — allow all ferns to grow to full size to build strong crowns. Harvest lightly in year 3 (2–3 weeks only). Full harvests from year 4+. Cut spears when 6–8 inches tall, before tips open. Asparagus is a 20–25 year investment — prepare the bed thoroughly with deep compost.

Grow in trays for the first season, then transplant crown-like roots into a dedicated permanent bed in year 2. Space crowns 12—18 inches apart. Do NOT harvest in years 1 and 2 — allow ferns to grow to strengthen crowns. Begin harvesting spears in year 3 for 20–25 years of production.
