Culinary vs Sponge Harvest Tip
For eating: harvest green at 15–20 cm. For natural loofah sponges: leave on the vine to fully dry (skin turns brown and shrivelled), soak in water for 30 minutes, peel back the skin, shake out seeds, and allow to dry — your natural sponge is ready.

Heirloom Luffa Gourd Seeds – Natural Sponge & Culinary Gourd

Grow Heirloom Luffa Gourd — the extraordinary dual-purpose vine that gives both a delicious culinary vegetable when young and a 100% natural loofah sponge when mature and dried. Young green fruits are eaten in curries, stir-fries, and daal. Mature dried fruits are peeled and seeded to reveal a dense fibrous skeleton — Pakistan’s original natural sponge. Vigorous climbers on a trellis are highly productive through the full Pakistani summer.

How To Grow

Soak Luffa seeds 12–24 hours in warm water before sowing. Sow 1/2 inch deep directly in warm fertile soil. Germination in 7—14 days at 25–30°C. Provide a very strong trellis, fence, or pergola — Luffa is a vigorous climbing vine. Space 24–30 inches. For eating: harvest young at 15–20 cm when skin is still smooth and green. For natural sponges: leave on the vine until fully mature and dry (skin turns brown and papery), then soak in water, peel, and squeeze out seeds to reveal the fibrous skeleton.
